X Block is a class that takes place once per week, and teaches skills which we believe are essential for all students, but are better taught outside of the full course curriculum. All students are required to participate. Courses are generally grouped by grade, allowing us to offer a set of six different X Block classes per semester. Examples of X Block subjects include:

  • Fairness and Equity – In this class we explore how fairness and equity play out in real life -- in school, in our families, in our neighborhoods, as well as systemically in society. Students learn about oppression, activism, and fairness, through interactive, engaging approaches.
  • Learning About Learning – This class asks each student to reflect about herself as a learner, both in the context of formal education and the world, by exploring modes of learning, brain processes related to learning, and a student's own strengths and weaknesses.  The course culminates in writing a Personal Learning Reflection essay, which can also be revised to fulfill a senior exhibition requirement.
  • Health and Wellness Education – This course covers issues of emotional and mental wellness, as well as physical health.
  • College and Career Counseling
  • Preparation for Graduation
  • Sex Education
  • Tech 2.0 – Students explore the various tools that are available to the public through the Web 2.0 movement, and technology available at Crefeld, then learn the practical applications to their school work and special projects.
  • SAT Preparation
  • Transition Planning – Seniors investigate all of their options post-graduation, as well as evaluate the new responsibilities that will come with adulthood, and then develop a plan for managing and achieving their goals.
  • Cyber Safety – Specifically designed for Middle School students.
  • Everyday Survival –This class covers the basics of everyday situations one encounters in life and how to overcome these obstacles.  Topics will include: changing a flat tire, what to do if you smell gas in your home, how to prepare for an interview, and many other interesting scenarios.
  • Power/Play – A class about teen dating violence, healthy relationships, communication and other related issues that students want to discuss.
