Diversity Teach-In: An afternoon of thoughtful discourse
Posted March 2, 2012
This past Friday, the Diversity Committee facilitated a Diversity Teach-In at Crefeld. Committee members include students and staff who worked hard to make this program a part of this year's curriculum.
The Teach-In was an intense community experience that brought up challenging feelings and difficult conversations.Committee members and Teach-In facilitators (staff and students) thought it was a necessary and useful step towards better understanding all members of our community. (And it was the entire community: all staff and students were required to attend).
Prior to the Teach-In, everyone was asked to choose an affinity group to participate in. Affinity groups included: African American; Asian American; European American; Latino/Hispanic; multiracial/multicultural; LGBTQ; and Jewish. Here's how the afternoon was structured:
- 12:50 Gather in the gym
- 1:00 Introduction to the afternoon
- 1:10 Silent movement activity
- 1:35 Disperse to affinity groups
- 1:45 Affinity groups follow their lesson plans, including creating final visual object to share
- 2:45 Transition in the gym
- 2:50 Carousel sharing and discussion
- 3:10 Meet as advisory groups in gym/theater - short evaluation
There was a planned general affinity group lesson plan that began with the reading of the guidelines for a safe, respectful discussion space. Generally, group discussions were confidential except for each group's final visual object that was shared with the entire school atthe end of the day. The afternoon was a success - most people left school on Friday with a lot to think about.

Support the Crefeld Yearbook!
Posted February 21, 2012
The Crefeld Yearbook Committee is working hard to bring our community yet another outstanding Crefeld Yearbook.
Crefeld is one of few schools that make their yearbook available to all students and faculty free of charge. To offset the cost of making this happen, we reserve a section of our yearbook for advertisements. These affordable ads are a great way to show support for the school, give an encouraging message to the graduates or a particular student, or to promote your business.
How you can help: Please use the attached form to purchase an ad; rates start at just $10 for a line-sized ad.

MS Edible Cell Day
Posted January 12, 2012
On Tuesday, January 10, the Crefeld Middle School took part in a biannual science class project, Edible Cells. Each student created her or his own representation of a plant or animal cell using food, and presented them to the group. This project helps the students understand the components and structure of cells in a fun and memorable way. The icing on the cake, so to speak, was after the presentations when they shared their "cells" with eachother, and enjoyed their delicious work. Check out more photos from this fun and educational event.
