Check out the photos from the Middle School's 2013 Pioneer Day, which happened on November 26. The day included cooking, living, and playing like pioneers, complete with a hand-built earthen oven for baking bread. Crefeld's Middle School students even invited the 5th and 6th grade classes from The Miquon School, and hosted various stations to introduce them to pioneer life. See the photos here.

One of Crefeld's amazing Community Service Learning groups, Crefeld Connects, is currently continuing its efforts to bring awareness to local poverty and help affect change for families through Crefeld's annual Sponsor a Family Holiday Drive. This year, we are partnering with the PathWay Organization to support a mother with three young children. Help make a difference for this family this holiday season by donating an item from the wish list (see link below), or donating money for the Crefeld Connects group to shop with for the family. Donations will be accepted through Friday, December 6, at 12:00pm. Family Wish List

Happy Halloween! In grand Crefeld tradition, today's Morning Meeting featured a variety of excellent costumes. Students came dressed as a myriad of pop culture, literary, video game, and entirely original characters. Crefeld staff, never ones to be outdone by the students, came as Brenda Belcher, Pop 'n' Fresh, and a large contingent of the faculty and associates from Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We were also graced with a special performance from legendary pop stars, Hall and Oates (science teacher, Dan Cunitz, and junior, Jack). Check out all the photos here.

On Monday, October 21, history teachers, Lisa Spilner and Michael Hawkins, took a group of seven students to the PA Bar Association's Minority Law Conference, held in the old Wannamaker building. Students heard a lecture from a top first amendment attorney, then worked in teams to create arguments for a cyber-bullying/search and seizure case. Schools then competed against each other in a mock trial of a student in front of a school board, and then an appeal to the supreme court after a conviction. At the end of the day, students moved into a courtroom in City Hall and heard a panel of lawyers discuss the first and fourth amendments. Our own student, Amma, won an award for being an outstanding advocate. All in all, a great trip! Check out photos from the conference here.

Every Wednesday afternoon, Crefeld students break into small groups or work independently on community service projects. This year, we have more than nine students working independently, and eleven different groups: Agents of Change, Awbury Arboretum, Crefeld Connects, Friends Of the Wissahickon (FOW), Jenks Elementary School, Schuylkill Environmental Education Center, Senior Care, SHARE Food Program, Northwestern Stables, This Old School, and Weavers Way Farm. Check out some photos from the FOW group cleaning removing litter from the Devil's Pool section of the Wissahickon.

On Thursday, October 10, MK Asante (Crefeld class of 2000), author of the highly aclaimed new memoir, Buck, returned to Crefeld to spend the afternoon with our students, and the evening with the greater Crefeld community and the public. MK talked about his life, read from Buck, and answered many questions. It was educational, entertaining, and heartening, and we thank MK for spending the day with us! Check out photos from the three events of the day.

This summer, Crefeld's community of students and staff took part in activities and trips as varied and extraordinary as the community members themselves. These ranged from attending, working, and volunteering at camps; taking college classes and workshops; volunteering at worthy organizations; exercising one's rights to peaceful protest; creating, exhibiting, and publishing various creative works; filming movies and promo videos; jumping out of planes; touring Europe and the Northeast of this country playing music to adoring audiences; rehabbing a house; farming; playing sports; lots and lots of hiking and camping; and of course, a great many of amazing trips, including one where a returning Crefeld family had a chance meeting with a new Crefeld family over 2,000 miles from Philly (Zach, Lucas). To see the full list of who did what, and a few photos of all the fun, click on this article.
